A couple of weeks ago I sent an email to Adventurepark Hellendoorn with the question to when the opening date this year would be. And to my surprise they answered me right away with an invitation for the 80th celebration of the familypark!
I've been to this park 2 times before, the first time I was a little tiny buddy, around the age of 8 I guess, and the second time I was around 13 or 14. And to be honest, the last visit has left a really sour taste in my mouth. I can clearly remember that the park had too many visitors at the time. It's not a big park, and it can't hold thousands of visitors at the same time. I'm not sure what made that day extremely busy (probably a voucher campaign), but I remember that you couldn't even walk properly without touching other people. I will not mention the waiting lines on that day.
But last saturday, the 26th of march 2016, the park opened for passholders, press and every 80+ year old citizen from the town of Hellendoorn. The opening took place at 2pm, with all the citizens holding a balloon and after recalling some memories of the last 80 years they let go of them.
The press then had the chance to talk to the elderly and ask them about their memories of the Adventurepark. We talked to a man that had met the love of his life in the park, which they continued visiting after they fell in love, every year or so. Lessons learned: Themeparks bring love.
After the official opening we were guided to the Sungai Kalimantan, the longest rapid river ride in the Netherlands (480 meters), and had the chance to ride the attraction with the elderly people, who were pretty excited to ride it.
I have to reconsider my thoughts about this park. The sour taste has disappeared, and has been replaced by happy thoughts. The beautiful sunny day and amazing employees gave me beautiful memories to look back at. I will certainly visit this park again when I'm near, bringing my family too.
P.S. I've met Spongebob!
